In redistricting, Arizona Republican gains could mean California losses

A victory by Arizona Republicans in the Legislature’s lawsuit against the Independent Redistricting Commission could portend GOP losses for their neighbors to the west.

California is eagerly awaiting the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling. It is one of the few states, along with Arizona, that has handed all power over congressional redistricting to an independent commission. And if Arizona’s Legislature wins its lawsuit, which alleges that only state legislatures have the authority to draw congressional lines, California may also be forced to completely redraw its districts.
