[OPINION] It’s past time to stop the madness

Have a little reefer … it won’t kill you. Or will it?

To believe what Pinal County attorney Lando Voyles and Maricopa County attorney Bill Montgomery preach about marijuana is akin to believing a little movie called “Reefer Madness” that was released in 1936.

“Reefer Madness” is an anti-marijuana propaganda film that showed high school students who tried the drug turning to recreational activities like manslaughter, attempted rape and suicide.

The federal government also contributed to the hysteria.

The Federal Bureau of Narcotics issued “public service announcements” in the 1930s that warned of the “killer drug.”

“Marihuana – a powerful narcotic in which lurks Murder! Insanity! Death!” read the FBN notices.

1936 was a long time ago.

Americans held beliefs then that are deemed boorish today.
