The House has easily passed a bill extending federal highway spending into December, buying time to try for a corporate-tax overhaul that could provide major new funding for the troubled program.
The vote was 312-119.
But skeptical Senate leaders remained on a different track, worried that a tricky tax debate might not produce an agreement by the end of the year. That could force Congress into a December showdown on highways, adding to year-end pressures. Senate leaders are also concerned that a tax overhaul could force some of their vulnerable incumbents into politically difficult votes.
