As if they needed it, Arizona state finances just took another big hit from the courts, this time in the form of a $160 million past-due notice payable to car-rental companies.
According to a Maricopa County Superior Court judge, the state since 2000 has illegally assessed a 3.25 percent tax on cars rented in Maricopa County.
Courtesy of voter-approved Proposition 302, the proceeds have been used to help make debt payments on the construction of University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals, the Fiesta Bowl and numerous other sports spectacles, including the Super Bowl.
