Cox sues Tempe over Google Fiber agreement

Cox Communications has filed a lawsuit to block Tempe’s deal with Google Fiber for ultra-fast Internet service.

The cable giant claims Tempe violated federal law by exempting Google Fiber from rules other cable operators have to follow.

“Tempe has violated federal law because while both Cox and Google Fiber provide ‘cable service’ over a ‘cable system’, only Cox is subject to regulation as a cable operator,” the lawsuit read. The legal filing seeks a permanent injunction to halt the city’s Google Fiber deal.
