Heaps of salvageable materials from demolished homes in the South Mountain Freeway’s path are being hauled away to landfills instead of recycled, despite a non-profit organization’s offer to resell the goods at its thrift stores.
Breinholt Contracting, the company hired to tear down dozens of houses in Ahwatukee Foothills to make way for the final stretch of Loop 202, needed only an hour to reduce the first stucco house to rubble last week.
As of Friday, the company had demolished four homes and will eventually raze 73 of 84 houses in the Goldman Ranch community, near 32nd Street and Pecos Road. The Arizona Department of Transportation is preparing to begin freeway construction next summer.
