Administration kicks the Fannies can down the road

Obama administration officials on Monday rejected calls to release Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from government control, signaling that it could be up to the next president or Congress to resolve the mortgage giants’ fate.

For the past year, a coalition of investment firms and affordable-housing advocates has pressed the Obama administration to privatize Fannie and Freddie, which have been under government conservatorship since being rescued during the financial crisis in 2008.
