Pinal County supervisor regrets voting for prison contract

Violent rioting at a private prison near Kingman on Fourth of July weekend resulted in Pinal County adding 380 inmates to its jail from that facility, but concerns remain about finances and safety as a result of that transfer.

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections to house the inmates on July 22, after the prisoners were transferred to the jail in Florence. The contract runs through the end of the year, but the state now says that Arizona State Prison Complex-Kingman — heavily damaged in the riots — won’t be ready to take prisoners back until Jan. 22 at the earliest.
