Saying the issues surrounding law enforcement body cameras should be left up to local police chiefs and county sheriffs, a study committee examining concepts for possible legislation about body cameras voted down more than a dozen different proposals.
Republican Sen. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills organized the study committee after sponsoring legislation in the 2015 legislative session that would have limited the use of police officer body cameras and limited the release of the tape in response to public records requests.
His hope was that the study committee, made up of members of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, civil rights associations, the press and attorneys, would come to an agreement over how best to protect the privacy of citizens and criminals caught on tape through police body cameras.
