Phoenix ranks 12th nationally in the number of robocalls received from marketers and debt collectors, according to the National Robocall Index.
The monthly report released by YouMail Inc. shows that robocallers bombarded the metro Phoenix area with an estimated 32 million calls in January.
Americans were plagued by a record 2.3 billion robocalls last month, a 54 percent jump from December. That equals 858 robocalls placed every second, according to YouMail, an Irvine, Calif.-based telecommunications company.
The data is based on calls blocked or reported as spam by YouMail subscribers nationwide. YouMail uses algorithms to detect any automatically dialed calls and then aggregates that call data into the Robocall Index.
Atlanta was by far the most robocalled city in the U.S. for the second straight month, with an estimated 99.6 million calls received in January. Dallas was second with 79.6 million calls last month and Chicago was third with nearly 78 million calls.
For the third straight month, Columbus, Ohio, was the city where the most non-toll-free robocalls originated, with 71.6 million robocalls made in January.
