Fear of same-sex adoption debate scuttles adoption, foster care bill; a case of ‘playing politics,’ says Rose Law Group Partner Kaine Fisher

Eager to avoid a debate on same-sex adoption rights in an election year, House Republican leadership is refusing to bring a bill to a vote on the House floor.

Rep. Rebecca Rios wants to offer an amendment to SB1102 to ensure the rights of same-sex couples to jointly adopt children in Arizona by protecting them in state statute. But the Phoenix Democrat won’t get the chance, as leaders in the House have blocked the bill from a floor vote to avoid debate on Rios’ amendment.

The delay here in Arizona to afford same-sex couples the same adoption rights afforded to traditional married couples is unconscionable. This is politics at its worst. I wholeheartedly agree with Governor Ducey that bills granting same-sex couples adoption rights is not necessary in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
