Desert-preservation conflict torpedoes Scottsdale planning efforts. (A fitting headline for a fight that has exploded, in part, over an area near Dynamite Road!) “[A] fervent battle over rural desert preservation in north Scottsdale has derailed the city’s latest effort to draft a new General Plan…” On one side of the battle: Residents, preservationists, and city council members. On the other side: Residents, developers, and city council members. Click to AZCentral for more on the General Plan (and a “‘desert rural neighborhoods’ proposal”) which has, according to one council member, “divided the community.” http://bit.ly/2i62drO

Lucid announces another partnership, city moves ahead planning for project. “LG Chem, a chemical company based in South Korea, has agreed to produce [lithium-ion battery cells] that feature a unique, trademarked chemistry developed in partnership with [Lucid].” Pinal Central’s Kevin Reagan also looks at the CG City Council’s “first actions related to the Lucid project,” which include an “agree[ment] to partner with Pinal County to conduct a $534,000 design study for improvements to Thornton Road,” and “a public hearing on… the city’s intention to annex 80 acres that will be incorporated into the Lucid project.” Details here: http://bit.ly/2hdNuwK

Glendale lands high-tech U-Haul manufacturing facility. “The [115,000-square-foot] facility is an expansion of an existing 50,000-square-foot plant…. where it makes those ubiquitous dollies that go in the back of every U-Haul truck, as well as the ramps for those same trucks.” Not a location for renting U-Hauls, but definitely a place where — according to Phoenix Business Journal’s Eric Jay Toll — one can see “[s]heets of steel… cut on the massive Whitney cutter or a… Salvagnini laser cutter built in Italy.” Rippin’! Read Toll’s EXCLUSIVE and view the 13-image slideshow, here: http://bit.ly/2ik45ga

Freshmen members of Paradise Valley Town Council talk priorities.  “What is your No. 1 priority for the Town of Paradise Valley as we move into calendar year 2017?… Is there anything you would like to see the town accomplish in the new year?… What are some things coming down the pike our readers should know about?” Scott Moore and Julie Pace respond in their Q&A with Paradise Valley Independent. http://bit.ly/2hgWx1L

2017 predictions: Animal spirits, cooling apartments and other forecasts for Phoenix real estate. And what are these “other forecasts”? They involve “shifts” in the “Valley center” and “growth” in “Pinal County.”  For all the fortune-telling details, click to Mike Sunnucks’ report in Phoenix Business Journal. (Where you’ll also get an explanation for use of the “old Keynesian term ‘animal spirits.’”) http://bit.ly/2igbj94

Percentage of young Americans living with parents rises to 75-year high. “Despite a rebounding economy and healthy job market, more young adults are living with parents or other family members than at any time since 1940. WSJ’s Chris Kirkham explains why.” (BTW, there goes the “When I was your age” rap whenever these young adults become parents, since it’s not going to be very impactful for them to snap at their kids, “You don’t know how lucky you are! When I was your age, I had to live rent free, sponging off your Nana and Grandpa!”) http://bit.ly/2hZpv5y

Superior Court judge refuses to block minimum wage hike. “Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Daniel Kiley rebuffed arguments by business interests that Proposition 206 should have been split into two separate measures… Kiley also said there was no merit to the claim that the initiative violates a state constitutional provision…”  But is this ruling “the last word” on the matter? Not according to Capitol Media Services’ Howard Fischer. See why and get further details on the ruling in his report at Arizona Capitol Times. http://bit.ly/2hdKksQ

Navajos recount litany of disappointments as tribe considers pulling housing authority’s funds.  “[S]hoddy construction, wasteful spending and poor treatment…. An Arizona Republic investigation found the [Navajo Housing Authority], steward of more than a billion dollars in federal funds, has failed the tribe’s people time and time again…. [Now, legislation] has moved through the Navajo Nation Council [that] would strip the NHA’s status as the tribally designated housing entity accepting U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds.” Read the report here:—> http://bit.ly/2i62U4o

Where Americans are moving; See where Arizona ranks. (Well, if our previous news item is to be believed, many Americans are moving to a little place called “Back Home.” But seriously….) “Census population estimates released Tuesday show where Americans are moving, with several new states emerging as top destinations. Most notably, a group of Western states that includes Nevada, Oregon and Washington continue to welcome more residents.” The full report along with a table showing states’ year-by-year “net migration rates,” in Governing. http://bit.ly/2hZsjj9
