State Rep. Kelly Townsend has apologized for a Facebook post that referred to “druggies” lifestyles, of celebrities who died in 2016 after she received blowback on social media.

The District 16 representative — which includes Apache Junction, Gold Canyon and part of San Tan Valley in addition to Mesa — wrote about the life lessons that can either make a person “coarse and thorny” or “more compassionate.”

“I made an attempt to post my thoughts on an issue that came out in the worst possible way,” she wrote Thursday before briefly explaining the situation. “What I will go back on, and have, is that referring to folks struggling with that problem by using derogatory terms. …If you read my previous comments and felt hurt by them, to you I apologize for doing so. I meant no harm to you. I am happy to offer the apology.”
