Approval of solar plant zoning equals uncertain future for Coolidge

Arizona utility Salt River Project (SRP) announced a 20-year power purchase agreement for a grid-scale, integrated solar and battery project that will be located in Pinal County

The recent county zoning approval for a 257-acre solar plant along State Route 287 may have some repercussions for the city of Coolidge, says City Manager Rick Miller.

Known as the Pinal Central Energy Center, the project is to be the first photovoltaic solar and battery-storage hybrid plant in the country. Already, Salt River Project has signed a 20-year energy agreement with the developer of the plant, NextEra Energy Resources, in April.

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors opted to move forward with the project during Wednesday’s meeting — a move that Miller believes was premature.
