After a lengthy recess where Coolidge City Council members went into executive session, the council unanimously approved the Sunshine Annexation.
The decision brings half of a 257-acre solar farm into the city limits. But despite the general nodding heads and eager quips of some citizens in attendance during Monday’s meeting, the decision was unpopular with some attendees.
In particular, the move to approve the annexation did not sit well with NextEra Energy, which owns the Pinal Central Energy plant slated for construction along State Route 287 and Sunshine Boulevard.
NextEra requested that the council consider delaying the annexation by one month.
