Good neighbor? Grand Canyon University wants to move Phoenix park

Grand Canyon University is offering to build a new park for residents who live in the neighborhood surrounding its campus — but some neighbors are saying, “No, thanks.”

The gift would come with a cost: The community would have to give up Little Canyon Park, which is surrounded on three sides by GCU’s campus, and the adjacent trail that runs through the heart of the school’s land.

GCU President Brian Mueller said this offer is intended to be a “win-win” for the community. The neighborhood would get a new park — the same size — just 1 1/2 blocks away at 29th and Missouri avenues. The university would get additional campus space to build classrooms and dormitories, he said.
