The Arizona State Board of Education is exploring whether it has any legal authority to punish the tens of thousands of teachers who participated in late April’s historic #RedForEd walkout, inciting tensions on social media ahead of Monday’s meeting.
The state board, which enacts statewide education policy and disciplines educators investigated for misconduct, will discuss at 9 a.m. Monday whether the scope of their responsibilities also includes striking teachers.
Already, dozens of people are weighing in on Facebook and Twitter — from #RedForEd supporters who expressed outrage over the discussion to others who believe educators should be punished more sternly for walking out of classrooms.
Many have indicated that they plan to attend the meeting.
