Police are investigating a report of a threat that developer and Johnson Utilities owner George Johnson allegedly made to Florence Town Manager Brent Billingsley by phone Friday afternoon.

According to Florence police, Johnson called Billingsley hours after Billingsley stopped to collect a sample of what appeared to be sewage leaking from a Johnson Utilities truck. Billingsley did not respond to calls for comment but issued a statement:

“On Friday June 8th, I received a short phone call from George Johnson (owner of Johnson Utilities), during which he made a serious threat against me. Immediately after the call, a police report was filed with the Florence Police Department to ensure the matter is dealt with in an appropriate manner. That investigation remains ongoing and any additional questions should be directed to the Florence Police Department. In the meantime, town of Florence employees, including myself, will continue to protect the life, safety and public welfare of our residents, businesses and visitors.”
