Diamondbacks slipping into the abyss

The Diamondbacks’ playoff dreams weren’t exactly easily attainable when this trip began, but at least they were intact. As they packed up their belongings in the visiting clubhouse on Sunday afternoon, the questions no longer were about where they were going but rather how they got here.

“I don’t know what to say,” shortstop Nick Ahmed said after a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros. “Everything is kind of hitting the fan at the same time.”

In the past week, the Diamondbacks lost three of four to the Colorado Rockies and two of three to the Astros. They were 2 1/2 games out of the National League West when the trip began. By the time their plane touches down in Phoenix on Sunday night, they might be five games back. The wild card doesn’t look much more promising. They could be 4 1/2 games out there.

BOX SCORE:  Astros 5, Diamondbacks 4
