The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors unanimously chose a new member on Wednesday to replace an outgoing supervisor.

Jack Sellers was chosen over 12 other applicants in the bid to replace Denny Barney as District 1 supervisor.

Barney resigned two weeks ago. He will assume full-time duties as president of the nonprofit East Valley Partnership.

Sellers, a Chandler native with city council experience, beat out ex-state legislators Steve Yarbrough, Jill Norgaard, Greg Patterson, Warde Nichols and Tom Forese.

David Richins of Mesa and Mark Stewart of Chandler, Brandon Schmoll, Frank Schmuck, Angela Creedon, Rusdon Ray and Jimmy Lindblum also applied for the post.

The district includes Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe and part of Phoenix.

Barney’s term ends in 2020. Sellers will have to run for the seat after the term is up if he wants to stay on the board.
