See where the first Macy’s Backstage concept is landing in the Valley and its potential retail real estate impact

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

Macys’s Inc. (NYSE: M) will bring its first Backstage store concept to the Phoenix metro area with a store in Mesa.

“Macy’s Superstition Springs plans on adding a Backstage to their existing store by the end of summer 2019,” said Macy’s spokesperson.

Backstage is a discount concept akin to TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Macy’s has been incorporating the concept into entire floors of some of its existing department stores to try to better compete to discount retailers.

Backstage will be built out in the third floor of the Superstition Springs Center. There is already a TJ Maxx at the same Macerich-owned mall.

The only other Backstage store in Arizona is at the Tucson Mall. Jordan said Macy’s does not have any other current Backstage plans in the Phoenix market.

The Macy’s concept shows the evolving nature of retail and retail real estate as the sector grapples with e-commerce and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN).

Malls and shopping centers have also had to become more creative and look beyond department and other stores to fill spaces. That is witnessed by the demise of Sears and Charlotte Rouse and more closures by J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP), Victoria’s Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch,

Coresight Research has founded 5,994 store closures have been announced so far this year. That is more than all of 2018 when 5,884 store closures were announced by retailers.

More restaurants, entertainment concepts and store that might have traditionally landed in power centers could be land at traditional malls.
