Avondale buying Gila River land after BLM deal, could open large swaths of land for potential development

Avondale is looking to buy land from the Gila River Indian Community south of the Estrella Mountains that could help open as much as 35,000 acres of land for potential future development.

Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise and the City Council have approved a measure for the city to work out a land deal with the Gila River Community for 18.2 acres of land on the southside of the mountains for future right-of-way use. The land is 6.25 miles south of ISM Raceway. The land is within Avondale’s planning area but is outside the current city limits. It is located along the South 139th Avenue (Litchfield Road) alignment near Germann Road in the West Valley.

The city sees the land as important for infrastructure and future planning and potential development.

The Bureau of Land Management is selling 3,400 acres to the Gila River Community south of the Estrella Mountains. The Avondale deal would acquire a small part of that land. The final sale price and transaction deals still need to be worked out and approved by the Avondale City Council.
