Habitat for Humanity opens 18 homes in Tempe, more planned

By Paulina Pineda | Arizona Republic

Abdifatah and Mariam Aden, originally from Somalia, lived in a small apartment unsuitable for their family of five. Besides lack of space, rising crime in their neighborhood and a bedbug infestation next door that had made its way into the Adens’ apartment compelled them to start looking for a new home.

For Michelle Blackman, a mother of three kids ranging in age from 10 to 21, the need for a stable home for her family led her to start house-hunting.

Venezuela natives Eladio and Daisy Perez de Albornoz and their 18-year-old son, Eladio Jr., lived in a small two-bedroom apartment in Mesa. The family, who moved to Arizona more than three years ago, started searching for a bigger space and a more affordable option.

The families each applied for and were accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s housing program.

They are three of the 18 families now living at the Tempe Parkview Townhomes.
