Phoenix City Council asked to study, potentially restrict facial recognition, surveillance technology

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The Phoenix City Council will hear a citizen’s petition item at its meeting Wednesday that could restrict the use of facial recognition and surveillance technology in the city.

The request comes from Eric Block Jr. who wants the City Council to direct city staff to examine facial recognition and other technology, its use, potential use as well as privacy and civil liberties concerns.

Phoenix residents can petition the City to examine or take an action on issues.

Facial recognition technology is increasingly used by police as well as private security as a number of venues such as sports stadiums and arenas as well as casinos.

Block’s petition to the council asks city staff formulate a report on acceptable uses of facial recognition technology for the elected body to consider at a later date.
