Community leaders are gathering signatures on a petition to encourage the Arizona Department of Transportation to follow through on plans for a Gold Canyon bypass to relieve traffic on U.S. 60.

Interested people don’t have to be Gold Canyon residents — nor do they have to go to Gold Canyon — to sign the petition. Anyone who drives the highway may send an email to, giving their name, address and stating they support the bypass, according to Glenn Walp, president of the Association for the Development of a Better Environment.

U.S. 60 in Gold Canyon is subject to heavy traffic almost at all times, including heavy trucks coming back and forth from mines, speeders and red-light runners. Each spring during two months or so of the Arizona Renaissance Festival the congestion is multiplied.
