Valley residents, neighborhoods help one another through coronavirus panic

Though the new coronavirus outbreak has prompted some to hoard necessities such as toilet paper, soap and non-perishable food items, some Arizonans have used the outbreak as an opportunity to show the best side of humanity and offer help to those in need.

The Arizona Republic is compiling these stories, which include people giving away hard-to-find necessities to complete strangers, helping vulnerable populations through grocery stores and paying for their items, and creating Facebook pages and groups to organize assistance for others.

Sending cards to nursing homes not accepting visitors 

Christina Miller’s 6-year-old daughter, Sophia, is too young to “fully grasp the gravity” of the outbreak, but she does have a talent for drawing that her mother thought could boost spirits in a trying time.

Miller said she felt “heartbroken” thinking of seniors who have to stay in their room in assisted living facilities that have largely banned visitors as the outbreak spreads.

She put the two together and decided to make cards with her daughter to send to nursing homes in the Prescott area, near where they live.

Miller posted her idea on a Facebook group for Prescott area residents, asking for ideas on where to send the cards.
