Pinal County on Thursday added thousands of tabulated ballots to its election results, with a big impact on one legislative race. The Elections Department continues to count provisional ballots and early ballots that were dropped off at polling places on election day.

Following Thursday’s update — the first since Tuesday — the department said there are about 7,000 early ballots left to count, as well as 182 provisionals. A final count is not expected until Tuesday.

In the incredibly tight race for the two Republican nominations for state representative in Legislative District 8, current Sen. Frank Pratt, who was trailing by 30 votes on Tuesday, jumped ahead of challenger Neal Carter. Pratt now leads by 40 votes for the second spot in the November general election. Incumbent David Cook leads the way by close to 1,000 votes. The two winners will face Democrat Sharon Girard.
