Arizona’s 11 presidential electors on Monday morning cast their votes for Joe Biden, sealing his 10,457-vote victory in the state despite President Donald Trump’s persistent refusal to accept election results.
After taking an oath administered by Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, the electors signed vote certificates for the offices of president and vice president, which were then sealed in preparation for submission to the U.S. Senate and National Archives.
The ceremony is typically procedural and uncontroversial, largely ignored by the general public. This year’s vote was different, with the Secretary of State’s Office declining to disclose the location ahead of time and security heightened at the Arizona Capitol.
Copies of the documents obtained by The Arizona Republic show a group that claimed to represent the “sovereign citizens of the Great State of Arizona” submitted signed papers casting votes for what they want: a second term for Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
