OPINION: Rep. Greg Stanton proposes penalizing Arizona residents unless Gov. Doug Ducey mandates masks. Sure, let’s stick it to the people who desperately need help right now.

If Gov. Doug Ducey won’t mandate masks statewide, Stanton proposes to penalize Arizona residents in any future COVID-19 relief legislation.

“As the COVID crisis reaches new heights, Congress can’t ignore that some governors have made things worse by thwarting science and refusing to adopt mask mandates,” the Phoenix Democrat tweeted on Monday. “It’s time for a new policy: If states and cities want federal relief funds, they must mandate masks.”

In other words, if Ducey won’t impose a mask mandate on the 10% of the state not now covered by a local ordinance, Stanton wants to penalize every Arizonan who so badly needs help right now?
