The recent escape of two inmates from the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence has reignited discussions about the eventual closure of the complex and its economic impact on the town.
At his State of the State address in 2020, Gov. Doug Ducey announced the prison complex in Florence would be shut down over three years to save taxpayers millions of dollars.
“We’re shutting down a state prison,” he said. “It will enhance safety at our remaining facilities and save taxpayers $274 million over the next three years.”
