Peoria buys land in Old Town

By Philip Haldiman | Your Valley

The Peoria City Council approved the purchase of 3.93 acres of land near 83rd Avenue and Cotton Crossing for $1.4 million.

The deal is expected to close this month.

Real Estate Development Officer Scott Whyte said the acquisition will allow for the future realignment of 83rd Avenue from Monroe Avenue to Cotton Crossing.

He said it could allow for a gateway entry feature into Old Town with placemaking opportunities, improve circulation in the area and enhance future transit opportunities.

The benefits include expanded municipal campus operations and community uses, as well as a possible sale for private development.

“Now the city can use it for future use whether it be for expansion of the existing municipal campus, public spaces, placemaking or selling it for private development,” Whyte said.
