Democrat Marco López, the former mayor of Nogales and Obama administration official, announced Monday he raised over $1 million during 2021 in his campaign for Arizona governor.
Fundraising in November and December doubled the amount of money coming in during the prior months, according to the campaign, an end-of-year boost López’s staff attributed to a discrimination verdict involving López’s opponent, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs.
“As we move forward in 2022 with thousands of Arizonans behind us, it’s clearer than ever that our message is resonating with folks across the state who are tired of career politicians they can’t trust and are thirsty for fresh, new leadership they can believe in,” López, 43, said in a statement announcing the fundraising haul.
López’s campaign purse was filled by small donations in 2021: Over 90% of contributions were from people who donated $25 or less, according to the campaign.
Over the next two weeks, candidates for statewide office must give the public the first glimpse into their 2021 fundraising. By Jan. 15 at the latest, candidates must file reports with the Secretary of State disclosing donors for all of 2021.
