Chandler ranks as one of the top U.S. cities for women in technology as the sector looks to close employment gender gaps.
That is according to a new analysis by financial research firm SmartAsset.
Still, the tech sector faces gender gaps with women making up 26% of total industry employment. Women also make 84% of what men do in the sector which is poised to add 178,000 jobs this year, according to SmartAsset.
The finance firm also looks at the best U.S. markets for women in the technology field.
The rankings are based on gender pay gaps, income levels and cost of living for female workers and employment growth.
Chandler ranks as fifth best behind only Arlington, Virginia, Washington D.C., Houston and Baltimore.
Chandler is home to a big Intel semiconductor campus and other technology firms.
“Last year, Chandler, Arizona ranked 14th-best overall in our study. This year, Chandler has gained traction and landed in the No.5 spot. Reasons for this include closing the gender pay gap (which is how much a woman earns compared to what a man earns): from 85% last year to 94% this year and income after housing increasing to $67,369,” SmartAsset said in a release on the rankings.
Other cities in the top ten include Fort Worth, Texas, Durham, North Carolina, Virginia Beach, Cincinnati and
Boston.
Detroit has the highest share of women in technology (41.7%). Irvine, California (41.7%) has the lowest percentage of women in its technology sector among the major U.S. markets.
SmartAsset ranks Tulsa, Oklahoma, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, at the bottom of the rankings.
