Neighbors say intersection can’t handle new subdivision

FLORENCE — After some public opposition, the Florence Planning and Zoning Commission postponed action on authorizing a developer to construct two model homes to allow the commission more time to examine plans to improve an intersection project neighbors feel is problematic.

Six neighbors of the new Western Crossings subdivision west of GreenTree Inn urged the commission to deny the builder’s request on June 1, noting that the intersection of State Route 287 and Centennial Park Avenue is still the only way in and out for 50 existing households as well as the new subdivision.

Tom Rankin, who lives across the highway, told the commission the intersection is bad, and if the commission approves home construction before highway improvements, “you’re contributing to the problem.”
