City of Scottsdale prepares for accessory dwelling units

By J. Graber | Scottsdale Independent

The number of short-term rentals could triple in Scottsdale with the passage of House Bill 2720, allowing for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on properties with single family homes.

The bill allows for one attached and one detached accessory dwelling unit to be built on a property with a single family home.

“Going back to the 5,000 STRs we already have in Scottsdale with single family homes, basically this legislation would allow us to have 15,000 because they would all be allowed to have two ADUs,” planning commissioner Diana Kaminski said during the commission’s July 10 meeting. “So we’ve tripled the number of STRs without adding housing really.”

The commission grudgingly voted 6-0 to begin the process of making a major amendment to the city’s General Plan 2035 and a text amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance in order to bring the city’s regulations in compatibility with the legislation that was signed by Gov. Hobbs May 21.
“God help us,” Kaminski said before casting her vote.
