Maricopa County Supervisor Thomas Galvin allocates board funding to Mesa splash pad improvements

Phoenix, Ariz. (October 23, 2024) – Led by Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has voted in favor of investing $108,000 of Community Solutions Funding into splash pad improvements at A New Leaf’s La Mesita Apartments for low-income individuals and families. La Mesita houses approximately 500 individuals each year who are struggling with housing insecurity, and nearly half are children and youth.

“A New Leaf is a fantastic nonprofit that connects families with services that aim to help them overcome challenging crisis situations and give them a new lease on life,” said Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin, District 2. “I am proud to support this improvement project at La Mesita Apartments that renovates their existing splash pad and ensures that the young children who live there have a safe place to play and explore.”

The funding will be used to refurbish the existing splash pad by swapping out the concrete pad with Tuff Coat Safety Surfacing, replacing broken equipment, and investing in larger underground water storage tanks that will more effectively keep the water cool and refreshing in hot temperatures. The system’s existing water storage tanks are too small and not insulated properly, resulting in hot water being distributed to the splash pad which poses a safety hazard to users.

“A New Leaf is proud to serve Maricopa County families by giving them access to community resources like educational classes on financial wellness and parenting, workforce services that assist residents in finding meaningful careers, and Early Head Start and Head Start programs that help children grow,” said Michael Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of A New Leaf. “We are tremendously grateful for Supervisor Galvin’s help in renovating the splash pad at La Mesita and know it will bring a lot of joy to the families who live there and may be experiencing big life transitions.”

The county budget provides each supervisor a set amount of Community Solutions Funding each year to help advance Maricopa County’s strategic goals and provide clear public benefits for residents.
