The Peoria City Council unanimously approved an amendment to restructure the city code on signage. It is viewed as a step toward creating a “vibrant, walkable” downtown.
“The amendments are largely intended to modernize, promote creativity and enhance signage regulations in Downtown Peoria,” read the official resolution item. “And secondarily to unite Downtown into two zoning districts, update the land use table and clarify associated definitions within zoning ordinance.”
With the code amendment, the city aims to promote more “dynamic signage” by relaxing regulations on outdoor signs. Blade and hanging signs are already included in the code which, according to planning director Chris Jacques, provided little room for creativity.
