A vocal group of Peoria residents have stood in opposition for a year to the council’s goal of economic development through a proposed airport in the northern part of the city.
The journey has included numerous public meetings, airport feasibility and economic studies, as well as protests both in-person and on social media.
It all abruptly came to an end as many of those residents attending a Jan. 14 council meeting when, after a city staff presentation, Deputy City Manager Mike Faust announced the city would no longer pursue or market an airport.
The announcement brought a burst of applause from the near capacity chamber.
