Assistant City Manager Bill Murphy, who was serving as the interim city manager since Jim Thompson left, unexpectedly retired Tuesday.

“The time has come for me to move my 32-year career to a close here in Scottsdale, and notifying you that I will be retiring from my position as your acting city manager immediately,” Murphy wrote to the city council in an email this afternoon.

Assistant City Manager Greg Caton will take over the city manager’s duties during tonight’s city council meeting. The council has added an item to the agenda to discuss how to move forward.

Councilwoman Solange Whitehead said she requested twice that the matter be discussed in executive session, like most personnel discussions are, but the council voted twice to keep the meeting on the regular agenda.

It typically takes 10 days to get an item on a council meeting agenda, but that can be bypassed if council members are polled and at least four agree to put the item on the agenda.
