When the Surprise City Council met earlier this year to discuss strategic plan priorities, transportation came in as a top one right after public safety.
So, in an effort to literally map out where the city wants to go with its transportation future, the council has asked for a transportation master plan.
That effort kicked off in April for what Vice Mayor Jack Hastings called an “absolute need.”
As Surprise grows by leaps and bounds, the transportation plan aims to specify policies, projects and programs needed to improve the city’s transportation systems.
All transportation modes in Surprise — including vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian and transit — will be part of the study in hopes to outline short-, mid- and long-term transportation needs and improvements through 2050.
City officials also want to prioritize which projects to invest in, identify truck routes, circulation and parking and identify road cross sections and street typologies to guide the size and number of travel lanes.
