It was a historic night in San Tan Valley, as its residents finally got the chance to vote on incorporating their community, and in doing so created Pinal County’s newest — and most populated — town.
The results posted by Pinal County Elections around 8 p.m. on Tuesday showed support for Proposition 495, which would incorporate the town of San Tan Valley, with 67.9% of the vote after 10,505 ballots were counted. In fact, the difference of 3,756 votes was more than the number of in-person ballots left to be counted.
By the time the remaining ballots totaling less than 2,000 were processed Wednesday morning, approval had gone down to 66.58%, but still incorporation was overwhelmingly approved.
There was elation coming from the STV Inc. committee and local residents in attendance at an election watch party hosted at the Rural Metro Fire Station 843 in Copper Basin Tuesday night.
Supporters of the incorporation effort gathered at the station in eager anticipation of the results. Cheers and claps filled the fire station just after the first wave of results were announced.
Many in attendance described the incorporation of the booming San Tan Valley as long overdue.
“This area right here is now going to have a body of individuals who will be able to speak specifically for them — not for the county as a whole but for San Tan Valley, that’s the cool part,” said Pinal County Supervisor Mike Goodman, who was in attendance Tuesday night.
And for San Tan Valley, Goodman noted that the battle to incorporate — with other efforts that had been previously fraught with challenges and roadblocks — was hard won by area residents.
