Standing in the soaked gravel on one of the first chilly mornings of November, Maricopa Pantry co-founder and President Alice Shoaf marveled at the food bank’s new building.
“This is our building. We’re finally there,” she said looking at the corrugated metal shell. “It feels like a dream come true.”
And it should. Nearly four years after a fire razed several of their refrigerated trailers at 50881 W. Papago Road, the pantry this morning hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its 8,000-square-foot warehouse.
“We have worked hard for this. This has been [our] dream for 20 years, for such a long time,” she said. “It’s been a little bit here and a little bit there, and it’s finally going up.”
