The Senate is expected to debate a bill in the Committee of the Whole on Monday that would give excessive speeders an alternative to having their licenses revoked.
House Bill 2417 (excessive speed; speed inhibiting device) would allow courts to order the installation of speed inhibiting devices that limit the speed a vehicle can travel to the speed limit of the road it’s traveling.
The bill passed the Senate Public Safety Committee 6-1 on March 25 with Democratic Sen. Rosanna Gabaldón casting the lone no vote.
When explaining her vote, Gabaldón said the measure would create “a complex, costly system” that would burden Arizona drivers.
“It requires drivers to install and maintain tracking based technology in every vehicle they use at their own expense, while exposing them to new criminal penalties if something goes wrong,” she said.
