Safe seats, open races: Arizona primaries put candidates to the test

By Jakob Thorington | State Affairs

Republican and Democratic candidates facing competitive primaries will appeal to voters this week as they work to replace House members not seeking reelection.

Monday night, Republican candidates in Legislative District 30 will debate each other in the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission primary debate series. They aim to replace Reps. Leo Biasicucci and John Gillette in the state House of Representatives. Gillette is not running for reelection and Biasicucci is running for state Senate.

LD30 includes Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, Kingman and other portions of northwestern Arizona. It leans heavily Republican, and the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission gives GOP candidates a nearly 50% advantage in vote spread, or the difference between average votes between the two parties in recent state elections. Whoever wins the LD30 primary will likely go on to be elected to the House in the general election.
