Car enthusiasts who enjoy pushing high-performance vehicles to their limits at APEX Motor Club in Maricopa now have another circuit on which to drive, thanks to Sunland Asphalt & Construction.
The asphalt maintenance and full-service general contractor company was hired by Trax Builders, led by John Hensler, to handle all grading and paving of Track 2, APEX’s brand-new second circuit. Track 2 was added as part of the facility’s major expansion to complement the original 2.27-mile Track 1.
The Track 2 project included over 260,000 CY of excavation and embankment to construct the track geometry and site infrastructure, placement of nearly 50,000 tons of aggregate base course, and installation of high-performance asphalt racing surfaces consisting of a 2.5-inch 1/2-inch MAG Marshall PG 70-10 base lift and a 1.5-inch 3/8-inch high-polymer modified PG 82-22 surface lift. Additional scope included specialized racing curbing, a large reinforced 100’ by 85’ concrete box culvert system with cutoff walls for stormwater management and long-term pavement stability, and supporting site and building pad development.
Track 2 at APEX Motor Club (located at 22408 N Ralston Rd, Maricopa, AZ 85139), is a premium, 2.43-mile high-performance circuit. The fast, flowing desert track allows members to drive their vehicles at top speeds in a private and exclusive setting.
