Out of the six million visitors to the Grand Canyon each year, 27,000 choose to see it from a raft along the whipping rapids of the Colorado River.
Now, House Bill 2279 aims to give commercial river outfitters immunity from the claims of injury and death that can arise from whitewater rafting.
The measure passed the Senate today — unanimously — at the hand of Republican Rep. Michael Way.
Earlier this year, Way explained the measure as a case of FOMO, or the fear of missing out. Other western states have similar protections for whitewater rafting. And horseback riding, another popular but dangerous sport in Arizona, has also earned industry protections.
