A large new battery energy storage system in Coolidge has the capacity to power 44,500 homes and will help provide reliability for future energy needs in Arizona, the developer says.
“Energy storage plays a critical role in maintaining a reliable and resilient electric grid, especially as demand continues to grow,” said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America. “Projects like Flatland Energy Storage ensure power is available when it’s needed most while also delivering meaningful, long-term benefits to the communities that host them.”
EDP Renewables North America has worked with Salt River Project and Coolidge to get the facility, dubbed Flatland Energy Storage, established after the construction of Brittlebush Solar Park, near Vail and Randolph roads.
Described as an “accessory” of the solar park, it will be taking in and storing solar energy that can be sent out to the electrical grid during intense use, especially during times that energy use is at its highest.
