Hobbs lands Republican endorsement in governor’s race

By Reagan Priest | Yellow Sheet

Former Mesa Mayor John Giles is endorsing Gov. Katie Hobbs’ reelection bid as she seeks to boost her image as a pragmatic, bipartisan leader.

Giles, a Republican, endorsed the Democratic governor in her first run for the office in 2022. In a video announcement released by Hobbs’ campaign Wednesday, Giles criticized Republican primary frontrunner Congressman Andy Biggs and praised Hobbs for putting “Arizona over partisan politics.”

“Real leadership means bringing people together to solve problems,” Giles says in the video. “After years in Washington, Andy Biggs has become part of the problem. He’s too focused on hyper partisan politics instead of delivering for Arizona.”

Giles is no stranger to breaking with his party to endorse Democratic candidates. While still serving as Mesa’s mayor, Giles endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential run in 2024 and U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly in 2022.
