Talk about peer pressure … State Treasurer Doug Ducey said he’s focused on his current job, thank-you-very-much. Try telling that to the Draft Doug Ducey committee, an assembly of business heavyweights and longtime supporters of the CEO-turned-politician who thinks that Ducey can aim a little higher.
Draft Doug Ducey, which registered last week with the Secretary of State’s Office, is working to build support for the former Cold Stone Creamery magnate in an attempt to persuade him to run for governor in 2014. David Rauch, CEO and general counsel of Annexus, a retirement-planning firm, sent out an e-mail blast urging supporters to register at draftdougducey.com so that, sometime soon, the committee can present Ducey with evidence that “he will have broad and deep support should he decide to run.” The website includes an open letter of support from Tucson car dealer and prominent Republican donor Jim Click.
Ducey said he was told about the committee before it registered and, although he wasn’t involved, he “didn’t try to stop it.”
“Leadership counts, but there’s really no substitute to listening to what the marketplace is telling you,” Ducey said. “It’s flattering that people like Jim think so much of me to do this. … When I’m ready to file, I’ll make a decision and I’ll do that.”
