Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward confirmed last night she is running for reelection to lead the state party, saying she is doing so at the urging of President Donald Trump. Ward warned a reckoning was at hand: “Here’s the truth: there are some potentially dark days ahead of us in the Republican Party . . . 

“Ward’s announcement, made in a video, ended months of speculation about her potential plans to run for statewide office in 2022 or join another effort outside of the state to promote Trump and his allies’ more populist brand of politics.

Ward, a former state lawmaker from Lake Havasu City, made the announcement on Twitter on the eve of a joint session of Congress to certify the Electoral College vote count. Like-minded GOP lawmakers are waging an effort to upend Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s win, a maneuver encouraged by Trump.
